Used Machinery Buying Guide

This article is intended as a general guide for anyone evaluating machinery of any kind for purchase or even for sale.

Evaluating machinery is part art and science.

The art involves determining if the good news outweighs the bad news both in terms of the capability of the machinery and the cost for bringing it to operating standards.

If only machinery came with a tag that explained:

“My belts are worn out and of an odd specification that is impossible to replace.

My motor requires 440 VAC/ 50 Hz, my control panel wiring is all aluminum and ready to break, the pneumatics are worn out and never were drained or oiled, all of my hydraulic components are leaking with a cavitating pump, and best of all, my computer system uses a custom software package with the last sighting of the programmer on a flight to Cabo.

But at least I am a good deal!!"

We are usually not so lucky to find either machinery or the owner of it revealing all of the “challenges” (repair nightmares!) we will have getting the machinery operating as promised.

After buying and selling machines of all kinds through the years, the main lesson is buy with research into the brand and a check list for the specific piece of equipment you are evaluating.

Buying a good, solid brand with support conquers half the problems you could face.

I've created a checklist that will go a long way towards conquering the other half of the potential problems.

At the very least, you will get a sense of the repair requirements, if any, and the costs involved before committing to purchase.

Good shopping!

Sometimes the low price for used equipment, will be expensive in the end. Or it could be the deal of a lifetime!
